Hot Mess
Well we actually had a little bit of winter here in central Texas. It's over and we survived. Ha ha. The Bluebonnet Special has been initiated with coatings of ice, but we are back from the car wash and the days are sunny now.
So what have I been up to, now that the days are getting longer? A fair bit. I think all the same projects as before, plus a couple of new things have arisen.
This deliciously dyed pile is a bunch of mohair locks. It has been patiently waiting in my spinning hutch for a very long time.
Yesterday it made friends with some carbonized bamboo that I was playing with, The colour is a very dark charcoal grey. Much too dull for this mermaid.
The result of their union is "Hot Mess". This is a tailspun yarn, with an invisible binder of very thin monofilament. It was a cheerful spin on a cheerful sunny day.
When I weave with this yarn the loose ends of the locks will hang provocatively from the fabric. I am not sure yet of the project, but probably a scarf is the logical candidate.
And since ROC Day is Saturday, I needed to get a little more fibre carded and ready for spinning. Well, it turns out that the spinners' celebration will be postponned this year due to some illness, but I needed to get prepared anyways.
This is just one time through the carder. I want to preserve a lot of the inhomogeneity in colour and texture. The black to dark brown is fine "black" alpaca. The shades of light blue are angora and the more white sections are merino wool. Altogether I was able to make nine batts before I ran out of the blue-white fibre. There was talk of a spinning round robin at the ROC Day, and so I wanted to be prepared with a lot of fibre. Now I am ready to ROC!!
