First Book

Pretty soon, within the month, this new publication will be "flying off the shelves". Yes that's me, the author. It will be the first entire book I have written. I was invited to and paid to write it, but best of all I had tremendous fun doing it. The best part for me was deciding on the content and how to arrange it into chapters.

It's a technical book and unlike some other field guides that were published in this same series, I had to give more introductory chapters. It's true that most people do not learn much geology through grade school or highschool and so the "base level" of knowledge of the general public is very low. And this book is written at the level of a junior high school or high school student.
The most challenging thing about writing it was the decision of what minerals and rocks to include. Because there are over 5000 minerals on this planet I had to be very careful in my selections. Primarily I went with the most common minerals that Nunavumiut (people who live in Nunavut, Canada's arctic) will come across. A couple I had to toss in because they are very significant to the economy there (eg. diamonds). We wish we could trip over diamonds all the time, but that's not the case.
I hope the publishers don't mind that I've pasted the image of the front cover here. But I'm pretty jazzed and just had to share with you. I believe it is the first technical earth sciences book from Nunavut and I'm proud of that fact. It is full of traditional uses information as well. It will be available in Inuktitut as well, in a tumble edition= how cool is that?
